About Us
Initially in Scunthorpe there were basketball sessions run by North Lincolnshire Leisure Services using money from the 'Community Against Drugs' Fund during the Summer of 2003. When this funding dried up the decision was made to create an independent club run by volunteers and in October 2004 the Scunthorpe Steelers Basketball Club was formed.
As a newly formed Club we applied for an Award for All Grant and were successful in securing the Club £4700. This funding helped to train more coaches for the Club and purchase high quality resources for training and games; it also ensured we had enough money to cover the cost of the hall hire during the Club's early stages.
During the Summer of 2005 we secured funding from England Basketballs OBI which enabled us to run a 3 day outdoor Summer Camp, this was a great success and so much so that we then held an indoor Christmas Camp during the first week of the School Christmas Holiday.
In 2005 the Club became two star accredited to England Basketball and in June 2006 we became the first basketball club in the region to receive our Clubmark award making us three star accredited. To gain our Club Mark various Club Officials have attended courses such as First Aid, Child Protection, Clubs for All, Equity and Coaching Disabled Players.
The Club has gone from strength to strength and now have three age groups, Under 12's, Under 14's and Over 16's. The Under 12's playing friendly games, the Under 14's playing in the Humberball league, the Over 16's competing in the men's Lincolnshire League and Doncaster Central Venue League.
From September 2006 the Club are establishing links with 8 primary schools in our area. We have developed a player pathway, and hope as a result of taking the game into schools the Club will attract more members whilst taking the sport to a wider audience.
The Club has members from all areas of society; we have a multi cultural mix and people from all economic backgrounds. We hold many social events, which are open to all Club Members; people who may be suffering financial difficulties are treated sensitively and are not excluded from any social event, the Club helping them meet any costs.
We currently have 2 level 2 coaches, 7 level 1 coaches, 3 qualified table officials, 2 qualified referees, a Committee of ten and approximately 60 members.
